Smartwatch sales may not be booming like they once were, but there is still a dedicated community behind them. Some smartwatch owners will just switch between the pre-installed watch faces, while others will look for unique ones created by the community. There are watch faces provided by 3rd-party developers in the Play Store, and then there's Facer. Facer has come a long way since its inception and the team behind it has just released a big update to version 4.0.
For those unaware, Facer provides a platform for smartwatch owners that allows them to create and/or download a watch face for their device. It's currently supported on both Android Wear as well as Tizen, so even if you opt for a Samsung smartwatch then you can reap the benefits of the dedicated members of this community. Typically, these watch faces have been provided by independent developers but this 4.0 update adds a dedicated section for actual watch brands.
This has been dubbed the Watchmaker Series and it currently has designs from brands such as MVMT, Maurice Lacroix, ArtyA, Snyper, VAER, and Manufaktur Waldhoff. To assist with this endeavor, the Facer 4.0 update also adds a verified accounts feature that works similarly to how Twitter implements it. A blue checkmark will designate whether a watch face is authentic or something recreated by the community. These changes are now in place in the desktop website and will be coming to the application as well.
The update also adds a new feature that makes it easier to take "wrist selfies" for those moments when you want to share your creation or style on a social network. The last new feature in this update makes all Facer watch faces embeddable as HTML5 widgets. These widgets are interactive, they display the watch face in real-time, and have the ability to send said watch face to your watch with a simple blue sync button.
