The Google Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL were announced on October 4, and released in selected markets in the same month. In India, the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL were launched on October 26 as online exclusives on Flipkart. The Pixel 2 became available on November 1, while the Pixel 2 XL was stated to be available from November 15. Although the phones were already expensive in markets such as the US, Google broke new ground when it made the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL the most expensive Android phones in India.
The Pixel 2's price started from ₹61,000 (~$946) for the 64GB variant, and went up to ₹70,000 (~$1086) for the 128GB variant. On the other hand, the Pixel 2 XL started from ₹73,000 (~$1133) for 64GB of storage, and went all the way up to ₹82,000 (~$1273) for the 128GB variant. To put it simply, the price tags of the phones were heavily inflated compared to US pricing, and it seemed unlikely that Google's second-generation Pixel phones would set the sales statistics on fire.
It seems that Google and Flipkart share our opinion, and this is why Flipkart has announced a massive price cut for the Pixel 2 in a sale which will begin on December 7 and end on December 9. During these days, the 5.0″ Pixel 2 will be available for ₹39,999 (~$621) – a discount of ₹21,001 (~$326).
How will this work out? Flipkart is offering a flat discount value of ₹11,001. Then, there is a ₹10,000 bank offer on all credit / debit cards. Used simultaneously, buyers can get the Google Pixel 2 for ₹39,999 if they pay using a credit / debit card.
That's not all Flipkart is offering, though. The e-commerce platform is also offering exchange offers on the Google Pixel 2, through which consumers can save up to ₹18,000 (~$279) if they exchange selected smartphones. Finally, Flipkart is also guaranteeing a buyback value of up to ₹36,500 (~$566) if consumers exchange their Pixel 2 units at a later point in time.
It's worth noting that Flipkart still doesn't offer any discounts on the more expensive Google Pixel 2 XL, which is still available for ₹73,000 and ₹82,000 for the 64GB and 128GB storage variants respectively. The sale for the Pixel 2 will only be held for three days, so interested buyers are advised to head over to Flipkart.
In our view, the price correction for the Pixel 2 was needed, as the original price tag was heavily inflated compared to the US price. Although the Pixel 2 features a relatively small 5-inch 16:9 display with large bezels, it can still be a good deal at its heavily discounted price because of its best-in-class camera performance, excellent UI performance and speedy software updates. Here's hoping that a similar deal arrives soon for the Pixel 2 XL, which will make it more palatable for users who are interested to buy a big-screen device from Google.
