Huawei's one of the most popular smartphone brands on the planet. It surpassed Apple's global smartphone sales for the first time in June and July, according to consulting firm Counterpoint Research, and ranks only behind Samsung in sales. That's in large part because of its growing smartphone portfolio in developing countries such as China and India, and on Thursday, Huawei took the wraps off one of the newest: The Huawei Nova 2S.
We began hearing about the Huawei Nova 2S a few days ago, when Huawei started sending invites for a press event. It was rumored to be an upgraded version of the Nova 2 and Nova 2 Plus phones that launched earlier this year, and those rumors turned out to be well-founded.
The Huawei Nova 2S packs a 6-inch Full HD+ 18:9 display with edge-to-edge bezels and ultra-wide viewing angles. Inside's the Kirin 960 chipset from Huawei's HiSilicon chip division, and a Mali G71MP8 graphics chip.
The back of the Huawei Nova 2S has a 20MP main camera paired with a 16MP secondary (both with a f/1.8 aperture), and the front houses a secondary set of dual cameras — one with a 20MP sensor and a 2MP sensor (with f/2.0 apertures) — that support Huawei's Face Unlock authentication. Huawei managed to squeeze in a fingerprint sensor in the front chin bezel, and a 3,340mAh battery with fast charging capabilities (9V / 2A) under the hood. (It can charge 50 percent in 30 minutes.) And the Nova S2 doesn't disappoint in terms of connectivity — it's got a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack, which is no doubt music to the ears of folks with legacy headphones.
The Nova S2 comes in blue, pink, gray, black, and red color options, and will ship in a number of configurations when it launches in China the week of December 12. Specifically, it'll come with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage for 2,699 yuan ($407), 6GB RAM and 64GB for 2,999 yuan ($453), and 6GB RAM and 128 GB for 3,399 yuan ($513).
