Pokémon Go Gets Dynamic Real-World Weather and 50 New Pokémon

When Pokémon Go took the world by storm in Summer of 2016, it seemed like everyone and their mother couldn't get enough. The hype surrounding it has cooled a little since, but Niantic, the development studio behind the mobile blockbuster, is looking to heat things up again with a major update. This week, it announced the addition of 50 new Pokémon and a dynamic, real-world weather system.

One of the update's biggest new features is the aforementioned in-game weather. It'll correspond to real-world weather near your geographic location, Niantic says — if it's raining outside, it'll rain in Pokémon Go — and those conditions will impact which sorts of Pokémon you see in the wild. (You're more likely to stumble upon an ice-type Pokémon when it's snowing than a fire-type.) It's not just aesthetic, though — in Pokémon battles, certain Pokémon will get a stat boost based on the weather. (Water-type Pokémon will do better in the rain, for example.)

Dynamic weather's been a staple of Nintendo's Pokémon series since the launch of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire in 2002, and it's not the only feature Niantic's borrowing. The aforementioned 50 new Pokémon are from Hoenn, the region where Ruby and Sapphire take place, and include starter Pokémon Treecko, Mudkip and Torchic and their evolutions.

So when's the new Pokémon Go update expected to hit the Play Store? Right now, actually. It's a staggered release — Niantic says it'll slowly roll out the new Pokémon week by week, starting mid-December with Treecko, Mudkip, and Torchic. And the in-game weather features will launch later, closer toward the end of December
