When you ask the average Western customer to name three different smartphone brands, they will almost always include Samsung in that list. In some cases, Samsung's Galaxy brand was overshadowing Android OS itself to the point where some didn't even know what Android was. The amount of work that Samsung has put into their smartphone division has definitely paid off for them as they dominate global smartphone sales quarter after quarter. However, there are some regions where Samsung actually struggles and a recent report illustrates how difficult it has been for them in China.
A new report from Kantar Worldpanel focused on Apple's performance in China following the release of the iPhone X, but it also revealed that Samsung is still struggling to gain any ground in the world's largest smartphone market. This is despite the fact that Android smartphones in general continues to gain market share; during the three months ending with October 2017 we saw Android gain 4.3% of the market in the big five European markets, 8.2% in the USA, and 7.5% in Japan.
This is partly due to the whole iPhone X release debacle but it also coincides with Windows continuing to drop shares in the mobile market. For some of the most popular smartphone OEMs in the world, markets like Europe and the USA are where they shine. However, this isn't the case with some phone makers who have made their mark in regions like India and China. The report highlights that there are 5 different smartphone OEMs which currently dominate 91% of the sales in China.
Those top five most popular smartphone OEMs in China currently include Huawei, Xiaomi, Apple, Vivo, and Oppo. This new figure of 91% is quite interesting because as of last year these companies made up 79% of the sales in China last year. In contrast, Samsung isn't anywhere close to making this list as they only account for 2.2% of the sales within the region. Not only that, but sales have shown to be deteriorating as well.
