Back in September of last year, we saw the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P get their final send-off from Google in the form of a slightly extended security patch period. The devices were known even then to not be receiving an upgrade to Android P. The expectation being the Nexus line of devices was well and truly finished as major upgrades were concerned. One alleged survivor remained. The Nexus Player did not have a published End of Life period even though it launched a year before the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P.
The device launched with Android 5.0 Lollipop and has been upgraded all the way to Android 8.0 Oreo, largely thanks to it being powered by an Intel processor rather than a Qualcomm chip. Nobody was sure when the device would finish receiving updates, but a spokesperson for Google confirmed to AndroidPolice that the device is finished in terms of updates.
The Nexus Player was Google's longest supported Nexus device ever and was a device that developers could use to develop for Android TV. Those wishing to develop for Android TVs can still use the Android P Developer Preview in an emulator and develop that way. Nevertheless, this truly marks the end of the Nexus line and means developers will likely have to purchase another set-top box if they want to develop for Android TV in the long-term. Emulators aren't always true to their physical counterparts.
It's not too surprising given the last update for the Nexus Player was last year, but it's great to finally have confirmation from Google that the device is no longer supported. Given it was left out of Google's publicly available end of life dates, the device was left in a limbo of sorts as developers didn't know where it stood. Now we can officially lay it to rest.
