OxygenOS 5.1.2 for the OnePlus 5/5T adds double tap to lock gesture, May security patches, and more

The OnePlus 6 is the latest OnePlus flagship phone, but that doesn't mean that the OnePlus 5 and the OnePlus 5T have stopped receiving updates. The phones recently received stable Android 8.1 Oreo, bringing them on-par with the OnePlus 6 in this regard. OnePlus has also continued to release Open Beta updates for both phones as well as the older OnePlus 3/3T.

Now, OnePlus has started rolling out OxygenOS 5.1.2 for the OnePlus 5 and the OnePlus 5T. This is a full ROM update with a download size of more than 1.6GB, so the company advises users to download it over Wi-Fi.

Notably, the update brings support for double tap to lock screen. Double tap to lock is the opposite gesture of double tap to wake. It's worth noting that the gesture is included in some OEM UIs. The inclusion of the gesture means that users can double tap anywhere on the home screen to lock the device. Aside from adding convenience, this can potentially be useful in the event of damage occurring to the physical power button of a user's phone, or even if the power button stops working entirely.

The update also brings May 2018 security patches — a sign that OnePlus is looking to improve its record in this area. This is good to see because by and large, OEMs continue to under-deliver when it comes to security updates. Other feature additions include "Places" in the Gallery app, which is described as a map view of photos by location. OnePlus has also added "Recently Deleted" collection. Finally, the update contains bug fixes including fixes for auto-rotation stability issue, Wi-Fi connecting issue, and an issue of microphone not functioning for AKG earphones.

The full changelog can be read below:

The update is an incremental update, and OnePlus states that it will reach a "small percentage" of users today, with a broader roll-out set to begin in a few days. The company also encourages users to submit feedback in its bug reporting forum.
