The introduction of Material Design marked the first time Google truly took a unified front when it comes to the design of all of their products. We're seeing Google services that haven't been updated in years receiving a coat of paint using the company's Material Design guidelines. Google has even started to recognize 3rd-party developers who are adopting the guidelines into their own applications in the Google Play Store.
Earlier this year at Google I/O 2016, Google highlighted the Robinhood application. The developers received the first ever Material Design Award for the Best Use of Material Design. Google says they want to continue to recognize developers who are using Material Design in unique and interesting ways. So this was the catalyst for the second annual Material Design Awards. One that would focus on very specific ways that Material Design was implemented into an application.
These 5 winners will be showcased at the SPAN LA conference on October 27th, and Google says they represent the best aspects of Material Design. First up is an application called Asana from the developers Asana, Inc, which won the Brand Infusion award for thinking the brand experience through when designing the app. Next up is an application called Fabulous, which won the Charming Engagement award for its unique illustration style.
Then we have a Japanese and Thai application called C Channel, that won the Creative Navigation Award for the way the developers organized their content in a series of tabs that can be navigated through via a series of swipes. The Kitchen Stores application won the Expressive Layouts award for their ability to create easy-to-scan layouts for recipes across a number of different screen sizes. Lastly we have Airbnb, which won the award for the Focused Efficiency category for how easy they made it to do things like signing in, browsing, and booking a reservation.
