Earlier this year, a rumor started circulating that allegedly revealed what is said to be the codenames for the three upcoming smartphones that Google is currently working on. Muskie and Walleye have been reported to be the successors to the Pixel phones, which will presumably be called the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL. This information was originally reported by Android Police but then these two codenames also appeared in a Gerrit page for the AOSP, further corroborating their existence.
A day later, Droid Life reported on a 3rd codename that their source told them about. The codename for this third device is said to be Taimen, but they were told the model is different from both Muskie and Walleye, and is said to be bigger than both of them. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this is the successor to Google's original Tango device. All the source told them about this was that it was indeed a smartphone but it wasn't part of the Pixel series.
Either way, some new information has come out that could have just revealed which SoC these three devices will be using. Roland Quandt over at WinFuture was able to find mentions of all three of these codenames in a new code commit made to an AOSP Gerrit page. All three of these devices are now said to "target" the SoC that carries the codename MSM8998. This codename refers to the Snapdragon 835 SoC so right now we are led to believe all three of these smartphones will use this chip.
This shouldn't come as any surprise since it makes since for Google to use the latest flagship SoC that Qualcomm has to offer. Granted, a lot could change between now and the release of these three smartphones. We could see Qualcomm release a new chip and Google switch to that one. But as it is right now, it looks like Google has plans to use the Snapdragon 835 in their 2017 smartphones.
