Report: LG to Start Producing Small and Medium-sized OLED Panels This Year

LG Display's OLED panels are quite popular within the TV industry. The company has been manufacturing their big panels and selling their OLED TVs for quite some time and many people really enjoy what they've been able to achieve for the price. In the smartphone space though, LG is known for their LCD panels and they have been using them in almost all of their smartphones for years. However, it looks as if this will be changing in the near future.

Since last year, LG has started to invest more heavily in their OLED development and production capabilities. We first started to see this ramping up back in April of last year with an investment of about $400 million. This continued a few months later in July with a huge investment of about $1.75 billion into their 6th generation OLED panel. LG's CEO (at that time) said he felt this new generation of OLED panels would be a "paradigm shift" in the OLED market and they might not be the only one.

A little over a week ago we saw a report claiming that Google was wanting to invest about $800 million in LG's OLED division. The report cited "unnamed sources" and has yet to be confirmed by Google at this time. This week though, we're seeing a new report out of South Korea that says LG is finally wanting to expand their OLED panel efforts from just large TVs and into small and medium-sized displays for smartphones.

It's unclear if Google will be one of the recipients of said OLED panels, but the report does mention Chinese smartphone manufacturers. The company is currently producing 4.5th generation OLED panels but it is said that they will be transitioning over to their new 6th generation panels in the third quarter of this year. The report says this will be in small quantities to select manufacturers and they won't begin mass production until the second quarter of next year.
