OnePlus Explains Their Smartphone Design Philosophy

Building up to the release of the OnePlus 5T, the company started publishing a number of articles to explain the various choices they make when creating a new smartphone. We first heard about the company listening to their customers' demand for the 3.5mm headphone port and that was why it stayed in the OnePlus 5T. They feel Dash Charge is better than wireless charging so that is why their phones are still made of metal. In a new blog post the company details their design philosophy when it comes to materials used, slimness, identity and more.

The start out by sharing their team's experience of Android phones and admit they all used iPhones, because they felt there wasn't an Android OEM who took design seriously. We're then told that since the company is headquartered in Shenzhen, China they are able to utilize the local manufacturing plants and iterate on prototypes faster than the competition. The company then says the design of the OnePlus 5 from earlier this year went through over 100 iterations before they were happy with the final product.

They may have made a name for themselves with the sandstone texture of the OnePlus One, they have moved away from such build materials and started using a solid all-aluminum body with the OnePlus 3. The main reason for this is said to have been from demand by the community so it was very high on their list. They claim they didn't want their all-aluminum phone to look like others so they started to build an identity with features like the curved back and the horizon line down the frame of the device.

The team feels that a slim phone feels better to hold and that is why they focused on it with the OnePlus 5T. They admit they could have made it thicker and put in a bigger battery while having less of a camera bump. Their data shows that while the vocal minority really wants a thicker phone, it doesn't actually translate to more sales. So according to OnePlus, if more people buy the slim phone, then that means they're happy with how slim it is.
