Xiaomi and Samsung have been competing for the top spot in the Indian smartphone market. For years, Samsung had successfully held off challenges from Indian companies such as Micromax, and had consolidated its place in the market. However, Xiaomi's entry into the Indian smartphone market resulted in rapid change. In only three years, Xiaomi overtook Samsung to become the largest smartphone vendor in India in Q4 2017, and maintained its number one position in Q1 2018.
However, this hasn't been because Xiaomi has found success in the premium smartphone market. In fact, Xiaomi continues to struggle in the premium segment, whereas Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus have achieved great success. So why is Xiaomi, by volume, the top smartphone vendor in India? It's partly because of the overwhelming popularity of the company's budget smartphones, and partly because of Xiaomi's dominance in the online space.
Samsung, of course, has not ignored this threat. The company has been trying to improve its budget smartphone portfolio. In January, it launched the Galaxy On7 Prime in the country, but it was a poor move as the phone turned out to be a re-brand of the Galaxy J7 Prime, which was released in 2016. Then, the company launched the Galaxy J7 Duo, but it seemed as if the company wasn't even trying as the phone still had obvious flaws, ranging from the HD display resolution to the lack of gyroscope.
Then, reports stated that Samsung would launch phones with Infinity Displays in May, and the company delivered. The Galaxy A6, Galaxy A6+, Galaxy J6, and the Galaxy J8 were launched in India as Samsung's first ever "mid-range" phones with Infinity Displays.
Now, an IANS report states that Samsung is set to launch a new online exclusive smartphone under its Galaxy On brand with Infinity Display in the first week of July. The new phone will have a Super AMOLED display, and it will feature 4GB of RAM with 64GB of storage. It will be powered by an Exynos chipset.
The report mentions that Samsung will also roll out a digital campaign before the launch as it refreshes its Galaxy On series. It may also be that the success of the newly launched Galaxy J6, J8, A6 and A6+ is prompting Samsung to launch another budget phone with an Infinity Display in India.
We expect to learn more about the device in the coming days.
