LG Display's Senior Vice President and CTO Mr. Kang In-byeong expects OLED panel adoption in smartphones to surpass adoption of LCD panels by as early as 2018.
According to him, OLED panels made up 27% share of the display panels used in smartphones in 2014, while TFT-LCD panels occupied a dominant 73%. In contrast, the proportion of OLED panels is expected to exceed 40% by riding on the new popularity of OLED panels among various device OEMs, and also because of Apple's adoption of OLED for its next iPhone. These figures are set to rise to as much as 58% for OLED in 2018, dwarfing the 42% share of TFT-LCD panels.
In addition to Apple, many other major OEMs such as Vivo, Oppo, Lenovo, Huawei, and Samsung have already adopted, or are looking at adopting, OLED panels in the near future. This fast growing demand for OLED has "motivated" LG Display to extend production of OLED panels from large screen sizes towards smartphone sizes.
Samsung, the current leader of OLED panels in smartphones, LG, and other OLED panel makers are also looking at expanding supply and setting up new factories for increasing production. Global annual production capacity for OLED panels increased from 3.6 Million sq. m. in 2014 to 5.3 Million sq. m. in 2016 and is further expected to increase to 14.7 Million sq. m. in 2018.
LG Display also expects a change of proportion in its consolidated revenues. TFT-LCD panels accounted for 90% of revenues while OLED units made up for just 10% in 2016, but the ratio is expected to change to 50:50 in 2020.
It is clear that OLED will play a larger part in smartphone panels in the near future. With curved displays getting popular and foldable displays also looking to make an entry into the commercial market, the future is undeniably OLED.
