New Motorola Moto X4 variant launching in India on February 1

On its official Twitter account Thursday, Motorola India announced that it will launch a new variant of the Moto X4 on February 1, 2018. The Lenovo-owned company says the upcoming smartphone will be "smarter, sharper and faster" than the previous generation, suggesting the new and improved Moto X4 might have an upgraded system-on-chip, more RAM, or both.

Motorola didn't divulge pricing or release details — the only thing it revealed is the phone's launch date, February 1. But according to a report in digit, the upgraded Moto X4 will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 system-on-chip — the first in the chip maker's 600 series to run on its custom Kyro architecture, notably — and an upgraded dual camera system with a black-and-white image sensor.

It'll likely ship with Motorola's suite of custom Android software features, too, such as Moto Voice, Moto Access, Attentive Display, and one-button navigation.

The original Moto X4 launched on August 2017, and has a 5.2-inch Full HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 system-on-chip, 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/4GB of storage, and a 3,000mAh battery. The unlocked variant of the Moto X4 recently began receiving an update to Oreo.

Two things about the Moto X4 stand out: Its IP68 water and dust-resistance rating, which is unusual for a phone at its price point, and the fact that it's the first official Android One device to launch in the United States (and the first phone other than a Pixel or Nexus officially supported by Google Fi.) For those reasons, the Android One variant of the Moto X4 remains a favorite among Android enthusiasts — it delivers a vanilla Android experience and direct updates from Google at a great price point.

We're expecting to learn more about the new Moto X4 in the coming days.
