You can now watch your Plex library in VR through Google Daydream

There's perhaps no home media platform more versatile than Plex. Recently, the service has grown by leaps and bounds with the addition of DVR, news clips, audiobooks, and other features. And on Wednesday, the Plex team launched a Google Daydream-compatible version of the client in the Play Store.

The folks at Plex went above and beyond for Daydream, implementing ways to watch content from a Plex Media Server with friends in real time, with voice chat. The VR application supports local video playback on an Android device (including 3D and 360 and 180-degree videos), all of it inside virtual environments such as an apartment and a drive-in movie theater.

Depending on your setup, watching a TV show or movie in virtual reality might sound like a strange idea. Home theater enthusiasts tend to prefer a dark room with a big screen and speakers on all four sides, which is great if you can afford it and have the room. But it's beyond reach for some people, and VR movie theaters on the HTC Vive, the Oculus Rift, and the Samsung Gear VR offer a pretty good approximation of the experience. Sure, some of the headsets aren't cheap (and sometimes require a powerful computer), but they're they're a lot more cost-effective (and portable) than a home theater.

Now, the Plex team has been known to throw out new features and take a while to smooth out the rough edges, and so far, we've heard a report from a Galaxy Note 8 user who experienced bugs with Plex's video progress bar, frozen video frames, and temporary loss of video when switching scenes. But your mileage may vary — we also heard from a Pixel 2 XL user who said he hadn't experienced any issues.

Those of us in the Plex community have been building collections of TV shows and movies for years now, and the prospect of being able to watch them on a Google Daydream-compatible device is tantalizing. Now, it's finally a reality.
