ASUS has its guns trained on Xiaomi's market share, as is evident by their budget smartphone, the ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, the Max Pro M1 competes with the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. While the highest-end model with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage is yet to go on sale, ASUS is going aggressive on the pricing of the other variants, selling the 3GB/32GB variant for ₹10,999 (~$163) and 4GB/64GB variant for ₹12,999 ($192). At these prices, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 comes out as a very sweet deal, better than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro too.
Of course, specifications and pricing are just one of the many facets that go into making a device good and recommendable. ASUS is trying its best to improve in other areas too. For instance, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 comes with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. ASUS had also rolled out an update to bring Face Unlock and security patches for April 2018 to the device.
Now, ASUS is rolling out another update to the device. This FOTA (Firmware Over-The-Air) update brings VoLTE support to the device for Indian carriers, namely Vodafone, Airtel, and Idea (with support for Reliance Jio already present on the device). The complete changelog is as below:
- Enables VoLTE for Vodafone/Airtel/Idea
- Updates Google security patch to May'18
- Improves the response speed of fingerprint sensor
- Improves front camera performance
The complete updated ROM is about 1.4GB in size and should be reaching your Max Pro M1 in the next few days.
The ZenFone Max Pro M1 is turning out to be an exciting device in the budget/mid-range. ASUS is providing an official bootloader unlocking tool for the device (though do note that unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty of the device), and the kernel source code for the device is also available. XDA forums for the Max Pro M1 are also open for all, and you can already find an unofficial LineageOS 15.1 build for the phone. The ZenFone Max Pro M1 is presenting a real challenge to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. Let's see how the competition reacts to this challenge.
