Motorola Begins Soak Test for Android 8.1 Oreo for the Moto G5S Plus

The Motorola Moto G5S Plus was launched in August 2017 as a half-yearly upgrade to the Moto G5 Plus, bringing in a bigger screen and a dual camera setup. Thanks to the inclusion of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, the insides of both the devices were similar, which led many to question how much of an upgrade a customer was really getting after 6 months. Motorola's update policy was also under the scanner, so having some more devices thrown into the mix did not invite confidence from consumers, especially for a budget device that was launched with Android 7.1 Nougat.

Nevertheless, the Moto G5S Plus did feature Lenovo's Android Oreo update plan. The Android Oreo update was supposedly rolling out in February 2018 for the G5S Plus in Australia and New Zealand (based on the press release received by the source publication), but the update was never spotted in the wild. We suspect that either the press release contained factually incorrect information, or that the rollout was stopped for some reason.

Now, after a long wait, we finally have some good news. Users in our forums have reportedly begun receiving the Android Oreo 8.1 update on their Moto G5S Plus (skipping over Android 8.0 Oreo). This update is rolling out to the users enrolled in the Motorola Feedback Network and is part of the soak test being conducted in Brazil. The update bears version number OPP28.60, and comes in at ~1.18GB.

It's only a matter of time until someone captures the OTA and posts it for other users. Meanwhile, if you are not enrolled in the Feedback Network, the update is unlikely to arrive on your phone just yet. Once the update passes through the soak test without any issues, it will be rolled out to all users gradually.
