There have been a lot of rumors and speculation about Samsung's upcoming flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S9 and S9+, and for good reason — they're the most highly anticipated devices in the phone maker's portfolio. They were originally rumored to make a cameo at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, but a Samsung official later revealed that they'd be unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona instead. Now, prolific leaker Evan Blass has revealed new information about the Galaxy S9 and S9+'s launch, pre-orders, and ship dates.
Mr. Blass, citing a "C-level executive at a major casemaker", said on Twitter that the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will launch on February 26, with pre-orders beginning March 1. It's expected to ship March 16.
According to a C-level executive at a major casemaker, the go-to-market schedule for Galaxy S9 / S9+ is as follows:
Launch – 2/26
Pre-orders – 3/1
Ships/releases – 3/16— Evan Blass (@evleaks) January 16, 2018
One of the first big leaks involving the Galaxy S9 was about how the iris scanner would be bumped to a resolution of 3MP. That might not sound like much, especially since we're used to smartphones with 13MP cameras and higher. But an upgraded iris scanner could make the Galaxy S9 and S9+'s biometric authentication tech even faster and more accurate than the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8's.
We've also seen renders based on CAD dimensions from a company that's reportedly manufacturing cases for the phones, and a rumor claiming that the Galaxy S9 will pack a a 3,200mAh capacity battery, up from the 3,000mAh battery in the Galaxy S8.
Despite the rumored upgrades, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ are said to be incremental improvements on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Both phones are reported to have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip or a Samsung-made 10nm Exynos processor, depending on the variant; up to 6GB of RAM; dual cameras; a minimum of 64GB of storage (expandable via microSD card slot); 3.5mm headphone jacks; fingerprint sensors; AKG-calibrated stereo speakers; and curved-edge Super AMOLED "Infinity" displays.
If true Mr. Blass's source is correct, Samsung will take the wraps off the Galaxy S9 and S9+ on February 26, the first day of MWC 2018.
